Software And Its Types

The term software is the programs and the other operating information used by the computer. In other words software means computer instructions or data. According to me anything that can be stored electronically or electrically is software.

The term software was first introduced by Alan Turing and used in this sense by John W. Tokay in 1957. According to me software can be thought of as the variable parts of computer while hardware is invariable parts.

Computer software is also called a series of instructions that tells the hardware of a computer what to do or how to do it. 

Examples:

• Ø  Some instructions of computer direct the computer to allow you to input data from a keyboard and store it in the memory.
• Ø  Other instructions of computer cause data stored in memory to be used in computer.

These instructions are called software.

 

 

 

TYPES OF SOFTWARE

Computer Software is divided into two type application software and system software.

 

 

 

 

 

Application Software:

It is the program that can do real works for user.

Some general kinds of application software include:

·         Productivity software (Includes word processors and spreadsheets etc), Presentation software, Graphics software, CAD/CAM software, Specialized scientific applications and Vertical market (for example, for banking, insurance, retail, and manufacturing environments) etc.

System Software:

System software is the program that can manage the computer itself such as operating system, file management utilities and DOS etc.

System software helps in running the computer hardware and the computer system. System software is used in communication with user and hardware.
